Summary:
CoastalCare manages and oversees mental health, intellectual/developmental disability and substance use services for residents of Brunswick, Carteret, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender counties. Although CoastalCare does not directly provide a service, it is our job to make sure services are available to those who seek it in our community, and that services are of the highest quality. These services are offered by a network of providers in our area contracted with CoastalCare.

Local Management Entities/Managed Care Organizations like CoastalCare are governed by an Area Board. The Area Board is charged with collaboratively planning, budgeting, implementing and monitoring services for mental health, intellectual/developmental disabilities and substance use disorders in the community. The Area Board is comprised of four representatives from each county CoastalCare serves. Of these representatives, there is one County Commissioner from each county. The remaining board members are chosen by the Board of Commissioners of the county they reside in, and represent various constituent groups and professional organizations specified by state statutes governing CoastalCare.

As the governing body, the Area Board exercises the responsibilities and duties given by the General Assembly. Area Board members serve three year terms, and are eligible for reappointment for an additional three year term. County Commissioner terms are concurrent with their terms as County Commissioners. Members of the Area Board elect the Area Board chairperson to a one year term of office.
