Administration - Discussion on Naming the Courthouse (Randell Woodruff, County Manager)

Issue/Action Requested:

Request that the Board of Commissioners discuss naming the Courthouse in honor of the late Ola M. Lewis, Superior Court Judge.

Background/Purpose of Request:

At their Regular meeting on May 4, 2020, the Board of Commissioners discussed and approved the installation of a plaque in the lobby of the courthouse in honor of Judge Ola M. Lewis.  The plaque was designed to mirror an existing plaque in the courthouse lobby to be installed following Phase I of the courthouse renovations.  The Board also discussed, at that same meeting, the naming of the courthouse after Judge Lewis and directed staff to provide options.  At their Regular meeting on November 2, 2020, the Board requested that the possible naming of the courthouse in honor of Judge Lewis be brought back before the Board on November 16, 2020 for consideration.

Judge Lewis had many accomplishments during her service to the County and the State of North Carolina while on the bench.  Judge Lewis was appointed District County Judge in 1993 serving until 2000 when she was appointed to a Special Superior Court judgeship by Governor Hunt.  Judge Lewis was awarded the Dogwood Award in 2017, the Order of the Longleaf Pine in 2018 and the Old North State Award in 2010.
