Background/Purpose of Request:
In the fall of 2019 Katie Juda, Jillian Meyer, and Ashley Lederer competed at Special Olympics North Carolina Fall State Games Tournament in bocce. Both Katie and Jill earned a gold medal at the state tournament and Ashley earned a bronze medal which qualified them to be considered for the USA Games team.
All bocce athletes that earned a medal at the 2019 states games were entered into a pool which Special Olympics North Carolina created to randomly select 4 athletes for the bocce team that would travel to the USA Games. Three of the four teammates chosen to represent Special Olympics North Carolina are Brunswick County residents.
The Special Olympics USA Games took place June 5-12th in Orlando Florida. While Ashley, Kaite, and Jillian were in Florida they competed in several bocce competitions including bocce singles, bocce doubles, and bocce team competitions. The bocce team which consisted of all four athletes from North Carolina finished in 4th place. Jillian and Katie earned a bronze medal during their bocce doubles competition and both Katie and Ashley won gold in their bocce singles matches.
All three of these athletes put in many hours of practice leading up to the USA Games and did a great job of not only representing Team NC at the USA Games, but Brunswick County as well.
Per resolution, staff requests that the County Commissioners formally recognize the accomplishments of the Brunswick County Athletes that competed in the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Bocce.
Alyssa Coln, Special Populations Coordinator will recognize each player with a copy of the resolution.
