Background/Purpose of Request:
The Brunswick County Stormwater Ordinance and Stormwater Management Manual were approved by the Board of Commissioners on September 16, 2002. The Stormwater Ordinance has been updated several times, most recently on 5/16/16. The Stormwater Management Manual has not been updated in almost 20 years. Due to the record growth and development in the county and changing weather patterns causing increased stormwater runoff from storm events, there are growing concerns regarding stormwater management throughout the county, especially in already flood-prone areas.
The Brunswick County Planning Board approved a resolution for Flood Resiliency in Brunswick County on April 11, 2022 recommending changes to better address stormwater drainage and flooding. One of the recommendations is to update the Stormwater Management Manual to require new development projects to be designed to higher standards for stormwater control.
Staff recommends the Board of Commissioners receive this Stormwater Management Manual update and approve staff updating the Stormwater Manual. Stormwater Ordinance revisions will be brought to the Board at a future meeting for approval.
